U3A Johannesburg is proud to support three outreach progammes financially and with members' participation.
BHCC reaches out to State hospital and clinic patients who are severely disadvantaged, unemployed or unemployable, often homeless and so strapped of funds that they cannot afford basic hospital necessities like a toothbrush or a washcloth. Typically they do not have any family support. Government health care funding cannot stretch to cover their basic needs. All BHCC beneficiaries are injured or sick, many chronically, with diseases like AIDS and/or TB.
The Link is a Non Profit Organisation which supports the development of literacy and numeracy in children for whom English is a second language, and who attend low income schools in Johannesburg. The organisation was founded in 2010 by Margi Bashall, a teacher, who was inspired by The Shine Centre. It is managed and staffed by volunteers – members of the community who are committed to making a difference in education and who enjoy working with children. Our volunteers do not need to have any teaching experience but they are required to be fluent in English as this is a second or third language for many of the children we assist. We provide basic training and all the resources required.
Let's Work creates stability and hope for those who were homeless. The Let's Work team cleans up suburbs, parks and pavements with funds provided by residents. Let's Work also provides food to the old aged homes and shelters in the suburbs it services.
